The Bart Cardon Academy for Teaching Excellence was established in 2010 to promote, recognize, discuss, support, and celebrate teaching excellence, with the goal continually improving the academic programs in the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences (CALES). The Academy was established through an endowment made by a CALES graduate who was particularly thankful and appreciative for the background and mentoring he received from instructors and advisors in the College. He named the Academy for one outstanding teacher and advisor, Dr. Bart Cardon, who was particularly inspirational.
The Academy affirms that teaching is a significant intellectual/scholarly activity, and helps advance models of teaching that foster deep and lasting understanding by students. Fellows in the Academy provide a variety of services to the teaching mission of the College, including sponsoring teaching workshops, mentoring new faculty and Teaching Assistants, promoting and evaluating recipients of teaching awards, and generally providing guidance to those interested in improving their teaching effectiveness. In addition, Fellows may also provide guidance to the Office of Career and Academic Services on faculty development and curriculum, by providing advocacy, service, and advice on teaching matters.
Fellows in the Academy are consistently recognized for extraordinary teaching and service at departmental, college, university, regional, and/or national levels. Membership in the Academy is not just honorific, but there is the expectation of active service in Academy programs and workshops.
