Definitions

Workload/Effort Distribution

  • Workload or Effort Distribution provides a percentage split of a faculty member's total effort into 6 categories
    • 1) Instruction: effort spent on instructional activities like teaching
    • 2) Research: effort spent on research activities like running grants
    • 3) Extension: effort spent on Land Grant mission activities like community engagement
    • 4) Service: typically 10% of a faculty member's total effort that is spent on activities defined as Service -- usually does not exceed 10%
    • 5) Admin: typically as a unit head, director of an institute/center, or program director that exceeds the normal bounds of service
    • 6) Other: for cases when a faculty member's time is shared between CALS and another college

Instruction Effort FTE

  • Instruction Effort FTE is the same as Instruction effort in Workload Distribution but is multiplied by the employee's FTE Total.  For instance, if a faculty member has a FTE Total of 0.50 and has a 50% Instruction effort in Workload Distribution, the calculation would be 0.50 * 0.50 = 0.25.
  • This is used for the effort calculations like Instruction FTE Diff, Needed (Course Units Needed), etc.

Instruction FTE Diff

  • FTE Difference uses the Instruction Effort FTE to calculate the difference between how much the faculty member actually taught (FTE Delivered) compared to what was expected based on the Instruction effort percentage.

FTE Delivered

  • Effort Units taught * 0.05 in accordance with CALS CATE standards.

Effort Units

  • An effort unit is the number of course units taught by an instructor adjusting for teaching effort, cross-listing, and co-convened.  For instance, if instructor X and Y both teach a 3-unit course R such that they equally team teach it, then the Effort Units for each of them will be 3 x 50% = 1.5 Effort Units.  For every cross-listing and co-convened item (co-convened a max of two for undergraduate and graduate splits), the course is further divided accordingly.

SCH

  • Student Credit Hours tells how many units were taught, essentially course units * student enrollment in courses.
