Legacy Community Champion

Individual Award: Nominee has demonstrated exemplary leadership for 5 or more years based on the criteria listed below.

Emerging Community Champion

Individual Award: Nominee shows exemplary leadership by initiating a new program or effort in the past 4 years or less based on the criteria below.

Team Community Champions

Team Award (two or more people): Team nominees show exemplary leadership and teamwork through CALES community building efforts based on the criteria below.

Eligibility

  • Current CALES staff, faculty, and students
  • Individuals can be nominated for the Legacy or Emerging award categories
  • Teams of two or more individuals must be nominated for the Team Community Champions award
  • Previous Shirley O'Brien award winners are not eligible to be nominated

Selection Procedure and Criteria

All members of the CALES Fairness Council will screen applications for the criteria listed below. Members who are a nominee or a nominator for the awards will be recused from the selection process. Nominees should excel through exceptional efforts beyond their normal position duties in one or more of the areas listed below:

  • Recruit and retain graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, appointed personnel and/or staff from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Promote an environment free from bias and discrimination.
  • Support access to training and career development opportunities for individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Promote a CALES culture that values fairness, mutual respect, and a wide range of viewpoints.
  • Develop and implement programs and curriculum that encourage understanding, respect, and collaboration across the CALES community.

Information Currently Requested

  • Nomination form including nominator and nominee information and the nomination letter (not to exceed three pages total).
  • Up to two additional letters of support, each not to exceed two pages. Support letters can be from colleagues, supervisors, students, a team, collaborators, or community supporters.
  • Letters should give specific examples of how the nominee contributed to the areas listed in the selection criteria being considered (one or more areas from the selection criteria list).

Calls for Nominations

Calls for each award category will be solicited once a year and are due on October 15 or the following business day. The call for nominations will include a link to the nomination form. Please contact Jeff Ratje with questions.
